When I think of spring, it reminds me of the Walt Disney movie Bambi. Mid-movie, Bambi the deer’s close friend, Thumper the rabbit, teases Bambi about being “twitterpated”. Thumper then meets his love match in a cute girl bunny who nuzzles her bunny nose into his bunny neck. On love’s cue, Thumper’s big rabbit foot automatically starts thumping wildly.

If I had to describe how spring makes me feel, it would be Thumper’s wildly thumping foot. Therefore, in honor of Thumper and all the wonderful feelings spring elicits, I have invented the new word “twitterpation”.

Twitterpation (noun): The rebirth and renewal of our sexual senses in the extremely finite time between the cold of winter and the sweltering heat of summer. As in, “I’m in twitterpation.”

Spring fever is a real and researched fact. Over thousands and thousands of years, our bodies have innately tuned themselves into the natural rhythms of Mother Nature.

Sanford Auerbach, MD, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Boston University, did some research on the topic and found, “When seasons change, the retina-the inner layer that connects to the brain through the optic nerve-naturally reacts to the first subtle signs in the amount of daylight. This reaction triggers hormonal changes, including an adjustment in melatonin.”

Explained with less medical terminology, we get giddy when there is more sunlight outside. During the dull months of winter, many of us suffer mild forms of Seasonal Affective Disorder. When the sun comes out, we get that necessary vitamin D to help lift our moods and our lethargy disappears. As well, the sunlight helps raise our testosterone levels. Testosterone, in case you don’t know, is the hormone that can have a major impact on our sexual libido.
